Projects & Programmes

 The Following are the major programs implemented by WSSS in NRM Sector.

1. Watershed Development Programs

WSSS has undertaken 06 Watershed Projects with the financial support of NABARD and Western Ghat Development Cell in Wayanand District. The location of Project area is Alattil, Ellumannam, Ayanivayal, Mattilyam, Porlom and Nellery. WSSS Implemented Western Ghat Development Projects with the collaboration of Edavaka and Thavinjal Grama Panchayath since 2002.Under the NABARD Holistic Watershed Development Programme (NHWDP) 04 Watershed projects covering- ha are being implemented in Thondernadu Grama Panchayath. The projects are implemented in a holistic manner on a cluster basis with the focus on family based livelihood activities in the project areas expected to bring significant relief to farmers.

1.1 NABARD Watershed Projects

Watershed development Project with the support of NABARD was implementing with the broad objective of unifying the multiple water shed development programs, being implemented into a single national initiative, through involvement of village level institutions and Project Facilitating Agencies. The Projects are implemented in 02 Phases, viz.. Capacity Building Phase (CBP) and Full Implementation Phase (FIP). WSSS is implementing 04 Watershed Projects in Thondernadu Grama Panchayath in Mananthavady Block of Wayanad District is started in the year 2008 December. Capacity Building phase of the projects was completed in December 2009 with the treatment of 286.54 ha. The projects entered into the Full Implementation Phase (FIP) in June 2011 with the sanction of grant of Rs.   228.19 Lakh towards treatments measures and Rs. 35.16  Lakh towards Management. The project envisages the treatment of 1642.46 ha of land with a sanctioned duration of 03 years. The major treatment measures are earthen bunds, stone pitched bunds, silt pits, agronomic interventions and livelihood measures. As part of the capacity building programs various training and exposure programs organized by WSSS in the Watershed area. In addition formation of JLGs, initiation of Organic certification program, formation of SHGs and bank linkages were also conducted. As a result of these programmes the watershed communities were organized very well for implementing the development programs in the Watershed area. The watershed community has already contributed a sum of Rs 317500/- as Maintenance Fund. The Village Watershed Committee (VWC) is actively functioning in the area. WSSS utilized 100% grant before the stipulated time. 

1.2 Western Ghat Development Programme

This programme is being implemented in Wayanad District since 2008. WSSS was identified as the first Programme Implementing Agency of the WGDP watershed programme in the State. The main objective of this programme is development of Western Ghats region in harmony with the environment and conservation of fragile eco-system. Till 2008 this programme has not been implemented on Watershed basis. Lack of such an approach affected balanced and coordinated development of this region. This necessitated the use of watershed approach for development. Now, this programme is being implemented on an Integrated Watershed approach to improve the management of land, water and biomass. WSSS implemented two watershed projects namely Ellumannam and Alattil watersheds under Western Ghat Development Programme. The details are given below.

2.JALANIDHI PROJECT (Total Drinking Water and Sanitation Project)

2.1. Koduvally Grama Panchayath

The main objective of the project was to make pure drinking water available to 16331 people including students of 03 schools belonging to 2515 households have acute drinking water problems in the GP. Out of the total financial outlay of Rs. 4,61,97,059/- we have been able to accomplish the project with Rs. 4,30,12,951/- ie, 93% for the overall development of Koduvally Grama Panchayath with special emphasis to drinking waters and sanitation. This is the biggest project of its kinds implemented in the state of Kerala.

2.2. Edavaka Grama Panchayath

Now WSSS initiated one more Jalanidhi Project in Edavaka Grama Panchayath with the support of Kerala Water and Sanitation Agency and World Bank. Already completed the project preparation work, and now the implementation work are progressing.


During the four three decades WSSS has been promoting renewable Energy Technologies cost effectively to meet the energy needs of the rural people. Promotion of alternative, non conventional energy sources like biogas, solar domestic lights, rain water tanks and smokeless choola etc. have been well integrated with other development work for the sustainable agriculture and livelihood promotion.   Further it has been conducting awareness generation programmes and successfully adopting waste management systems. WSSS has been pioneers in adopting ferro-cement technology, which is an innovative and cost effective technology adopted in the construction of Biogas plants and construction of tanks for vermin compost and rain water harvest. 30% of cost reduction in construction makes this widely accepted among rural communities. Till now WSSS constructed around 4000 Bio gas plants, 2500 vermi compost units and 750 rain water harvesting tanks.


Facilitating Agricultural Regeneration Measures (FARM) is a project envisages Agricultural Regeneration in six Grama Pachayaths in Wayanad district there by restoring the pristine ecology of this area. It is the 3rd phase of a project launched in 2007 by a Consortium of seven leading NGOs working in Wayanad district. FARM project adopts strategies to be built up models in the area which will be replicated by the farming community in the Panchayaths. It is also envisaged to increase the living standards of 600 marginalized farmers by increasing their income by 15% through promotion of sustainable livelihood options in six GPs in 3 years time. The project will ensure that at least 600 families are opting for practicing organic farming.

The project area spreads in 11 villages in six grama panchayaths in Wayanad district. The Grama Panchayaths are Mananthavady, Thirunelly, Edavaka, Padinjarathara, Kottathara and Thariode. Major programmes envisaged in the project are;

  • Workshops and Seminars for the selected farmers and lead farmers.
  • Demonstration workshops on organic farming
  • Training and promotion of nutrition garden
  • Workshop on advocacy & lobbying
  • Preparation of Micro plan
  • District level convention
  • Skill development training for 60 persons with disabilities
  • Model creation for replication of organic farming programme.
  • Campaign against Alcoholism and Drug Abus
  • Project monitoring and Review meeting

5.National Agriculture Innovation Project

Wayanad Social Service Society is fortunate to become a partner in the National Agriculture Innovation Project constituted to take up multi enterprises farming models to address the agrarian crisis of Wayanad district of Kerala. This is an integrated project for implementing innovative technologies for boosting the productivity of traditional crops/ agri. based enterprises of the area, in a multi-enterprises farming concept. The project is implemented in three clusters in the district. The selection of the cluster was made, based on the backwardness of the area, which is decided based on per capita agriculture income, sex ratio, percentage of tribal population and literacy rate. The most backward clusters were selected. The project applies the concept of achieving sustainable livelihood through economically viable, ecologically safe and socially acceptable technologies. The project is implemented in Consortium mode with Kerala Agriculture University (KAU) as the lead centre and five partners including Wayanad Social Service Society.


The objectives of the Project are:-

  • Productivity enhancement through optimal use of resources and technologies including organic farming
  • Women and Tribal empowerment through agri based self employment programs
  • Developing a viable system for procurement and marketing of agriculture produce with or without value addition
  • Conservation and management of soil and water resources to mitigate drought and other natural calamities
  • Capacity building for human resources development

 Roles and Responsibilities of WSSS in NAIP

Under objective number one, Productivity enhancement through optimal use of resources and technologies including organic farming following are the roles and responsibilities of WSSS

Popularization of organic production methods and certification for crops of Wayanad for better income and healthier environment, and in objective number three, Developing a viable system for procurement and marketing of agriculture produce with or without value addition following are the roles and responsibilities of WSSS

Promotion of value added products in select primary produce: Spices and Jackfruit

Market promotion for value added products of micro enterprises and organic products

6. Other NRM related Projects Implemented by WSSS

  • Jalgram Micro Watershed Development Projects in Marakkadavu and Kuttimoola Villages with the support of Save A Family Plan (SAFP)
  • Watershed Development Projects in Karimbil, Vellamunda and Valadu villages with the support of Inter Co-operation.
  • Medicinal Plants Conservation Project with the support of Department of Science and Technology
